Mountain Bike - Trail Cycle leader Course & Assessment

MTB TC Course

Trail Cycle Leader Course: Monday 3rd – Tuesday 4th November 2008 - £140 plus VAT

This course is recognised by the Adventure Activity Licensing Authority (AALA) and British Cycling (BC) the internationally recognised governing body for cycle sport in Britain. The award consists of a two-day training course followed by a one-day assessment after minimum of 30 days consolodation period (for use in AALA defined non-licensable terrain)

The Trail Cycle Leader Award is an ideal qualification for anyone who works in Outdoor Centres, Guiding Companies, Schools, Youth Groups etc.

Candidates must be 18 years of age or over. Max 8 participants

Course content:
• Introduction/TCL & AALA/Risk Assessments
• Workshop based maintenance session (gears, brakes, chains and tubes)
• Cycling skills Course including climbing and descending, on-road riding management, clothing and leaders equipment and trail definition. Navigation, route cards
• Session of skills: Track stands, manual front wheel lifts, power assisted front wheel lifts, unweighting the rear of the bike.
• Group ride covering – good cycling position, weight distribution and balancing, route finding and navigation, teaching, leadership.

Trail Cycle Leader Assessment: Friday 8th August 2008 - £75 plus VAT

Maximum 1:4 ratio. There will be assessment dates post course for those who have gained sufficient logbook experience (20 rides of varying lengths) .

Candidate must register through SMBLA. Registration currently £45 (as at June 08) www.scuonline.org/downloads.asp?DLsection=10 for which you will receive the SMBLA Official Training Manual containing all the training modules for the TCL, MBL and Expedition awards, together with the SMBLA Logbook and additional documentation to progress through the Award Scheme. Candidates would also be eligible to receive many benefits offered from British Cycling (BC) or Scottish Cycling (SC), Third Party Public Liability Insurance and Free Legal Advice and Support.

• Full day mountain bike journey. Working with a ratio 1:4, each candidate will receive 1 leg to lead. During that leg it is expected that they will deliver a flowing journey demonstrating good leadership practice and also coach a skill session
Certification:
TCL Certificates will be awarded by Scottish Cycling to candidates who have satisfactorily passed the TCL assessment on the recommendation of the Tutor, and who, at the time of assessment, hold a valid first aid qualification.
For the award to remain valid the candidates must possess membership of the British Cycling/Scottish Cycling through the SMBLA and hold an appropriate and valid first aid qualification.
