The event is organised by Exmoor Rotary Club and aims to provide a challenging orienteering walk for school-age children (aged 10 to 17) encouraging teamwork, responsibility and endurance. The course length is about 16 miles and covers the south-eastern area of Exmoor over a variety of terrain, starting and finishing at Dulverton Middle School.
There are 4 people in a team, and they have to follow a route which is not marked - so following instructions, map-reading, and compass skills are essential. There are a series of check-points along the route and each leg has to be done in a pre-determined time - points are deducted if teams arrive too early or too late, and those who get very tired and lag too much are pulled out of the challenge. All competitors who complete the Challenge receive a medal; shields are awarded to the teams scoring the most points in each category.
There are eight Checkpoints along the way, which have to be reached at prescribed times. Each Checkpoint is supported by a radio operator from Raynet (Tiverton) ensuring constant communications across the whole course, and we are grateful for the services of the Exmoor Rangers and St John Ambulance.
