New Mountain Bike routes for Exmoor

Off-tarmac cyclists will find there are fewer surprises in store when cycling on Exmoor thanks to a new grade cycling map produced by Exmoor National Park Authority.

Recreation manager Paul Hawkins explains: "The maps you get when you go ski-ing are really useful as they tell you which routes are pretty tame and which will scare you witless plus there are a few grades in between so that you can tailor your day to your ability with no nasty surprises. "We often get feedback saying routes that look easy on the map are actually very challenging and part of the consultation on the Rights of Way Improvement Plan has
lead to Exmoor National Park Authority producing a graded map for off-tarmac cycling in the area."

The new waterproof, rip-proof paper map, which grades the severity of off-road cycling routes on Exmoor, is now available from National Park Centres or from the Authority's on-line shop at www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk The map uses the Cycle Touring Club's nationally recognised grading system, with routes ranging from green (easy) to lack (very challenging). This style grading has been used successfully at skiing resorts for many years, ensuring that novice skiers don't set off down a very steep and challengingpiste and ensuring a good day out is had by skiers of all standards.

The same principle has now been successfully applied for mountain biking in a few areas of Britain and it is hoped that this map improves the enjoyment of all mountain bikers
coming to Exmoor and encourages them to return in the future.
