This week conservation charity South West Lakes Trust celebrated the official opening of the bird hide at Ruggs Bay car park, Wimbleball Lake.
Officially opened by Cairns Boston Chairman of the Trust, the bird hide has been funded by the Exmoor Sustainable Development Fund, the Somersert Rural Renaissance Partnership and South West Lakes Trust with in-kind contributions from the RSPB and volunteers.
Cairns Boston said that he was delighted to see so many supporters at the opening and thanked the funders for their support in such an effective project.
The new hide was manufactured and installed by Kleen Kutt, a local firm, based in Bridgwater. The roof is made from cedar roofing shingles and the cladding of tannalised feather edge boards. All the timber used is FSC certified, originating from Exmoor and the Quantocks.
Stacey Construction of Wiveliscombe constructed the new 70m access track which is a resin bound surface no loose material, making it ideal for wheelchair and pushchair use.
The London Camera Exchange have been extremely kind in providing 8 binoculars which can be used by school groups and for guided walks and the RSPB have provided ID posters and images for bird check list.
Roger Butcher, local ornithologist and volunteer, helped to dismantle the old bird hide and helped to produce the draft for the bird check list solely updating the bird list for Wimbleball.
