12 Sep 10Let’s not beat around the bush here, this sportive is tough! It is not a ride for the faint hearted, with some hard climbs and fast descents. But if you like tough rides, then the Black Rat North Devon will become a firm favourite with you.
Event HQ is at Lobb Fields Camping and Caravan Site. Easy to reach with ample parking, it makes for a great HQ location. They have kindly offered a discount to any Black Rat riders who wish to stay on site the night before the event, which we strongly recommend because you do not need to be up at the crack of dawn to drive here and then ride this tough but stunningly beautiful course!
North Devon > 100 Km Ride
The 100 km route is ideal for cyclists who have not tried a sportive event before or who are not confident of their ability to ride 100 miles on hilly terrain. It should not be taken that the 100 km route is easy - it is definitely a challenge - but should be within the abilities of anyone who has done some decent training. The majority of the tough climbs come early in the ride when you will still be fresh but you should train to be able to ride 100 km in hilly terrain.
North Devon > 100 Mile Ride
The 100 mile route is ideal for more experienced cyclists who want to challenge themselves over a longer distance. It is a tough route, we have made sure of that, but is definitely within the abilities of any cyclist who rides regularly over medium / long distances (50 miles plus).
The route has plenty of variety and is not just climb after climb. There are several flat fast sections interspersed with some tough climbs and undulating roads plus some fantastic descents. The scenery alone makes this ride worthwhile with spectacular coastline views across to the Isle of Lundy from the cliff tops of North Devon and the dramatic views afforded on Exmoor.
