24 Jul 11 - 28 Jul 11Watergames the Atlantic Watersports Games is a competition that continues to grow. The International Committee of the Interceltic Watergames, created in 1996, is an association that brings together representatives of the different member regions with the aim of developing nautical sports in the Atlantic area. Each year, at the General Assembly, the Committee members choose the country or region that will organise these games that, during the course of one week, bring together delegations from all the Atlantic and Celtic regions in Europe to participate in nautical competitions.
So, while the history of the games began with the aim of promoting the sport, tourism and culture of the nationalities and regions of Atlantic Europe all at one event, the sporting aspect of this competition is becoming increasingly more important.
The annual, under 21 sporting championship event, gathers together the best regional teams from across the Atlantic area. Athletes take part in a weeklong event competing in sailing, kayaking, surfing, rowing, kite surfing and a newly added competitive sport for this year Surf Life Saving.
There is loads going over during the week long Games. Not only can you watch the athletes competing, but you can have a go yourself as there is a range of 'taster sessions' available for the public.
